OVERVIEW

Founded in 1929 and now in our 89th year, Chamber Music Cincinnati is the nation’s third most enduring chamber music presenter, the sole one in our region that exclusively features international touring chamber musicians.

Chamber Music Cincinnati presents the finest international touring chamber music ensembles and soloists – who are at or approaching the pinnacle of their art – in the performance of great traditional and contemporary works. Through concerts and outreach efforts, CMC helps build chamber music audiences and support classical musicians and composers.

CHRISTIAN COLBERG: Viola Concerto
R. STRAUSS: Don Quixote

Fabled windmill-fighting knight Don Quixote inspires music of adventure and passion. Strauss' homage employs solo cello and viola along with a full orchestra (including a wind machine!) to depict Cervantes' colorful characters. CSO Principal Violist Christian Colberg performs his own Viola Concerto, which also traces the fantasies and triumphs of the chivalrous Spanish knight.

This concert is part of Series 3.

From Mendelssohn to Piazzolla and Wayne Shorter to Stravinsky, Imani Winds infuses new music and new voices into the modern classical idiom. In 2015, they premiered a new work by Frederic Rzewski. Their 2017 – 2018 season includes premieres by Valerie Coleman, Reena Esmail, Nkeiru Okoye, Courtney Bryan and Pulitzer Prize winner Henry Threadgill. A concert-length new work by Imani’s French hornist Jeffrey Scott was written for the ensemble, jazz trio, and string quartet. The Passion musically explores the idea of a fictitious meeting between JS Bach and John Coltrane.
